Julie Fei-Fan Balzer will be here October 13th, 14th & 15th to teach 3 classes! “Interesting Faces” “Go Big or Go Home”  “QoR Watercolor”

“Interesting Faces”

Friday, October 13th

If you’ve ever been intimidated by drawing faces, don’t be! Come and play during this face workshop! We’ll create all kinds of interesting faces, quirky faces, funny faces, collage faces, and sketchy faces. Julie will break everything down into step-by-step bites that are easy to digest. This is not a traditional art class striving for realism, but a fun class that’s about making art that draws the viewer’s eye in! As the name of the class suggests, we will work on six 6×6 mixed media collages at the same time! Working on
multiple pieces at the same time is a great way to loosen up, experiment, learn, innovate, play, and get your mojo singing! Throughout class Julie will guide you through the process step-by-step, sharing tips on color, composition, painting and collage techniques, and so much more!
Students Should Bring: Paper of all kinds — watercolor paper, scrapbook paper, book pages, envelopes, collage paper, painted deli paper, etc. Gel Medium – I like Liquitex Matte Medium, 6-10 colors of acrylic paint (including black and white), Paintbrushes (1 small round, 1 medium round, 1 large fat, and any others you like), Water Jar or container for water * Scissors * Black Marker and any other paint markers you like –I’ll be using Permapaques, Palette Paper * Optional: apron, rag or papertowel, heat gun and ex- tension cord/power strip, art journal, favorite stamps &
ink, favorite stencils & cosmetic wedge sponges, brayer.

“Go Big or Go Home” – 2 Day Canvas Class
Saturday, October 14th AND Sunday, October 15th
10am – 4pm BOTH DAYS

In this two-day workshop we’ll be painting big! One of my “aha” moments as an artist came when I was trying to reproduce a Rothko painting at 1/16th the size of the original. It was impossible to copy his delicate shading in such a small space.  Join me to experience how working large opens up a myriad of exciting possibilities when you paint.  We’ll work on two pieces simultaneously, exploring different approaches in each piece.  You’ll learn about acrylic paint, layering technique, patterns, creating your own personal motifs and symbols, how to know when a painting is “done,” and so much more!

  • 8-12 Large Sheets of Drawing Paper (I like Strathmore 400 Series – we will be painting on this paper)
  • Bristle Paint Brushes: 1 large flat, 1 round medium, 1 small medium, and any other brushes you love to use
  • Acrylic Paint: 8-12 colors, including black, white, and a metallic
  • Matte Medium (or a similar paint extender)
  • Credit Card or plastic hotel room key
  • Paper Towel or Paint Rag
  • Jar or Container for Water
  • Palette Paper or a Paper Plate to use as a palette
  • 2 Large Canvases (30”x30” or larger) – if you work quickly, feel free to bring more than 2
  • water soluble crayon or pencil in a dark color – black, brown, forest green, deep blue, etc.
  • skewer or stick
  • Table Top Easel – WSD is working to find inexpensive table top easels available at the store.  If you have one and can bring one, that would be greatly appreciated.
  • Optional: Apron, Baby Wipes, Gesso, Super Heavy Gesso, palette knife, spray bottle of water, favorite stencils, favorite stamps, artists tape, house paint, bubble wrap or other texture tools, spray ink, reference images.
