SKILL LEVEL - BEGINNER

A functional and easy to make bag with four styles that feature both zippered mesh and zippered vinyl pockets in a variety of sizes. Use them to organize, store, and carry all sorts of treasures. Perfect for organizing personal items and clothing in a suitcase or to carry supplies to class. You’ll think of so many ways to use these handy bags!

 

Pocket Packers measure 18½”H x 13½”W and each style features a full-sized zippered mesh pocket on the back. On the front are zippered vinyl pockets in a variety of sizes depending on the style that you choose to make.

 

  • Style 1 has 1 pocket
  • Style 2 has 2 same-sized pockets
  • Style 3 has 3 pockets of varying sizes
  • Style 4 has 4 pockets in a variety of sizes.

 

Any of the pockets can be divided into more than one section. A reinforced handle attached to the top of each bag can be customized for carrying by hand or over the shoulder. Designed to be made with small amounts of fabric, Pocket Packers are perfect for using the newest fabrics from your favorite designer or a collection of pieces from your stash.

 

Materials needed: (from the back of the pattern)


Supplies Needed for Day of Class:
□ Sewing machine with power cord and foot pedal (manual for any assistance with the
machine)
□ Knee Lifter (optional)
□ Recommended Feet: 1⁄4” foot, zipper foot, edge (topstitch) foot, and walking foot
□ Teflon Foot is recommended – easy to sew on vinyl
□ Recommended Needles: size#90/14 Microtex needle
□ Coordinating Thread
□ Rotary Cutter and Personal Cutting Mat
□ Rulers (12 1⁄2” and a variety of other sizes are helpful)
□ Pins
□ Scissors and Thread snips
□ Wonder clips (small and large)
□ Washout Marking pencils or pens; Frixion Pens; chalk; Air Erase Pen to mark with
□ Stiletto
□ By Annie’s Basting Tape
□ Glue Stick (optional)
□ Irons and Large Cutting Mat (provided by store)
□ Creative Grids Circle Rulers (proved by the instructor to share)
Review the pattern for any additional supplies and tools.
Feel free to have food or drinks with you as you work, and we’ll take a short break for lunch.

HOMEWORK.... Completing the prework before the day of class is recommended to help ensure
you finish the Pocket Packer during class.


Complete the following in advance:
□ Read pages 1 – 3 to familiarize yourself with the general information.
□ Read all my instructions before you begin.
□ Print page 9—the labels. VERY IMPROTANT TO ATTACH LABELS TO YOUR PIECES.
□ On page 2, you will find the information regarding instructions for organizers with pockets
in four variations.
□ Determine the style organizer you will be making.


Page 2 - 3 I. CUT AND QUILT:

▫ Prepare: Main Fabric, Lining Fabric and Soft and Stable for quilting. Follow the
cutting instructions for cutting each of the above-mentioned fabrics/Soft and
Stable.
▫ Pages 3: B. QUILT - Follow the steps in this section; quilting the layers. Use a
temporary adhesive spray to baste & hold the layers together.
▫ Page 3: C. Cut Quilted Fabric and Seal Edges - Follow the steps in this section.
There is a special note on how to cut the directional fabric.

□ Prepare: Coordinating Fabric, Fusible Interfacing, Mesh and Vinyl

fabrics.

Page 3 II. Prepare Components - READ AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR EACH SECITON

▫ B. Prepare Handle - OPTIONS

1. Follow the directions in the pattern. Complete steps 1 & 2 in advance.
2. Use 1-inch-wide webbing for the handle. Cut one 1” x 13”. Seal the ends.
See note in pattern regarding a long handle.

▫ Prepare Zippers - Depending on your chosen style, you’ll need to prepare some
zippers. The back mesh pocket uses an 18" zipper (page 3). For the front pockets,
prepare 15" or longer zippers as required for the style you’ve selected.
▫ The pattern doesn’t include detailed zipper-prep instructions, but please prepare
these zippers in advance. I’ll answer any questions at the start of class.

We’ll begin class with a quick review of the selected styles, go over the zippers needed, and then move into preparing the Back and Front Pockets.
Please bring all the labeled pieces, along with the prepared components and any extra fabric and stabilizers, as well as your pattern to class.
