Turn fabric letters into something personal, playful, and uniquely yours! In this creative class, you’ll design a custom zipper pouch using preprinted letters from the Selvedge Magic Multi Letters and the Selvedge Magic Icons collection by Ruby Star Society. Cut, arrange, and design a name, favorite word, short phrase, or fun saying, then stitch it all together into a one-of-a-kind zipper pouch that reflects your personality and style.
Finished Size: Custom—your pouch size is determined by your design layout.
What You’ll Learn
• Designing with preprinted fabric letters and selvedge icons
• Planning layout for spacing, balance, and readability
• Basic zipper pouch construction techniques
• Clean finishing methods for a polished, professional result
Materials Needed:
A basic zipper pouch pattern will be provided at the beginning of class via a separate QR
code. In addition, students will receive a detailed class handout with step-by-step instructions, helpful tips, and notes to recreate the project at home.
• 1⁄2–1 yard Selvedge Magic Multi Letters
• 1⁄2–1 yard Selvedge Magic Icons fabric
• 1⁄2–1 yard coordinating fabric for lining
• 1⁄2–1 yard batting or fusible fleece
• Handbag zipper (up to 24") or zipper by the yard
• Basic sewing supplies
• Notebook for additional notes
Instructor Note
Fabric requirements will vary depending on the length of the word, name, or phrase you
choose to create. Short words and longer phrases both work beautifully—bring your creative ideas!
Bring coordinating fabrics that pair beautifully with the letters and icons to add extra color,
texture, and creative interest to your pouch design.
Supplies Needed for Day of Class:
□ Sewing machine with power cord and foot pedal (manual for any assistance with the
machine)
□ Knee Lifter (optional)
□ Recommended Feet: 1⁄4” foot, zipper foot, edge (topstitch) foot, and walking foot
□ Recommended Needles: size#90/14 Microtex needle
□ Coordinating Thread
□ Rotary Cutter and Personal Cutting Mat
□ Rulers (12 1⁄2” and a variety of other sizes are helpful)
□ Pins
□ Scissors and Thread snips
□ Wonder clips
□ Washout Marking pencils or pens; Frixion Pens; chalk; Air Erase Pen to mark with
□ Stiletto
□ By Annie’s Basting Tape
□ Iron(shared) and Large Cutting Mat (provided by store)
Feel free to have food or drinks with you as you work, and we’ll take a short break for lunch.
Pre-Class Preparation:
There is no pre-class preparation for this project. All cutting and construction will take place during class, starting from the beginning of the project.
What to Bring to Class:
Please bring all materials listed, along with a notebook for notes. Be prepared to cut, design, and sew during class time. This class brings back a little childhood fun—like playing with letters in elementary school—but with fabric and sewing!
